Sebelum memasarkan produk atau jasa, seorang &lt;em&gt;Marketer&lt;/em&gt; harus paham inti dari &lt;em&gt;Marketing&lt;/em&gt;, dimana &lt;em&gt;Marketing&lt;/em&gt; merupakan sebuah proses dalam memuaskan kebutuhan dan keinginan manusia. Dalam kaitan memuaskan kebutuhan tersebut, seorang marketer harus paham secara mendalam tentang &lt;em&gt;Marketing Mix&lt;/em&gt; (Product&lt;em&gt;, Price, Place, Promotion&lt;/em&gt; atau biasa dikenal 4P) dari produk atau jasa yang dipasarkan. Selain itu, seorang marketer harus juga memahami &lt;em&gt;Segmentasi, Targetting, Positioning&lt;/em&gt; (atau STP) yang sudah ditentukan oleh &lt;em&gt;Brand Management&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Pertanyaannya, mengapa seorang marketer harus mendalami &lt;em&gt;Marketing Mix&lt;/em&gt; dan STP ?. Dua konsep marketing itu memiliki pengaruh yang besar dalam eksekusi di lapangan, yakni pada aktifitas promosi. Contoh sederhananya, dengan memahami Segmen konsumen yang dibidik, seorang &lt;em&gt;marketer&lt;/em&gt; akan dengan mudah menentukan media &lt;em&gt;advertising&lt;/em&gt; yang akan digunakan, misalnya majalah remaja untuk segmen remaja. Pada dasarnya, aktifitas promosi yang bisa dijadikan "senjata" oleh seorang &lt;em&gt;marketer&lt;/em&gt; ada beberapa jenis, yang dikenal dengan Promotion Mix, yaitu &lt;em&gt;Advertising Media, Sales Promotion, Personal Selling, Direct Marketing&lt;/em&gt;, dan Public &lt;em&gt;Relation&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Lalu, bagaimana hubungannya dengan &lt;em&gt;salesperson&lt;/em&gt; ?. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Tujuan terakhir dari promosi adalah transaksi, dimana konsumen membeli produk atau jasa yang kita tawarkan. &lt;em&gt;Impact&lt;/em&gt;-nya adalah omset penjualan produk atau jasa tersebut. Seorang &lt;em&gt;salesperson&lt;/em&gt; pun harus peka dan paham tentang &lt;em&gt;coverage&lt;/em&gt; area-nya. Sehingga, membutuhkan perencanaan, agar aktifitas penjualan berlangsung tepat sasaran. Sedangkan &lt;em&gt;organizing&lt;/em&gt; dilakukan dalam kaitan mengatur rute kunjungan salesman, jarak tempuh ke tiap - tiap &lt;em&gt;wholesaler&lt;/em&gt; / agen, dan sebagainya. Dalam &lt;em&gt;Actuating&lt;/em&gt; dan &lt;em&gt;Controling&lt;/em&gt;, bisa dilakukan misalnya dengan cara melakukan &lt;em&gt;Sales Tracking&lt;/em&gt;, yakni dengan mengolah data - data omset untuk mengetahui seberapa besar perkembangan omset di masing - masing distributor. Adapun beberapa komponen promosi (dikenal dengan promotion mix) yang dimaksud adalah advertising, sales promotion, public relation dan publicity, personal selling, dan direct marketing. Dan, setiap komponen promosi memiliki karakteristik tertentu.&lt;br /&gt;Advertising bisa digunakan untuk membangun citra (image) sebuah produk dalam jangka waktu panjang ataupun bisa digunakan sebagai alat pemacu penjualan. Melalui advertising, konsumen akan dibuat percaya bahwa merek yang dipromosikan secara berkualitas merupakan produk yang memberikan nilai lebih. Adapun bentuk baru dari advertising adalah advertorial, Infomercial, dan Banner. Advertising dianggap sebagai proses membujuk secara tidak langsung, berdasarkan atas keuntungan produk, yang didesain untuk menciptakan kesan yang menyenangkan yang dapat merubah pikran menjadi keputusan membeli (turn the mind toward purchase – used long term approach to gain customer)&lt;br /&gt;Sales Promotion biasanya digunakan untuk memacu dan meningkatkan respon pembeli terhadap suatu produk dangan cepat dan maksimal. Aktifitas Sales Promotion biasa juga digunakan dalam kurun waktu singkat untuk memaksimalkan penawaran ke konsumen dan memacu peningkatan penjualan. Adapun bentuk dari Sales Promotion adalah kupon, kontes dan sebagainya.promosi penjualan dianggap proses membujuk secara langsung, biasanya berdasarkan atas insentif eksternal dari pada keuntungan yang ada pada produk dan untuk meningkatkan sales lebih cepat dari biasanya (buy now – used short time approach to gain customer). Secara konsep, keduanya (advertising / iklan dan sales promotion / promosi penjualan) memiliki arti yang sama yaitu digunakan untuk menghasilkan kesadaran (awareness), perubahan sikap (establish atau change attitudes) dan mendorong keputusan membeli bagi calon pembeli (Rossiter, Percy, 1987:4 – 5,24 – 25).&lt;br /&gt;Public relation dan Publisitas (publicity) pada umumnya digunakan untuk meningkatkan kredibilitas, baik kredibilitas produk maupun perusahaan.&lt;br /&gt;Personal Selling adalah bagian yang paling dianggap efektif dalam tahapan buying process khususnya dalam membentuk persepsi konsumen sampai pada keputusan membeli. Personal selling cenderung melibatkan hubungan interaktif antara dua pihak atau lebih (antara konsumen dan perusahaan / sales person). Dan, melalui personal selling, pembeli / konsumen akan dibuat merasa memiliki kewajiban untuk mendengarkan penawaran dari pihak perusahaan.&lt;br /&gt;Direct Marketing memiliki beberapa karakteristik dimana pesan disampaikan langsung pada pemilik, bisa berupa surat, telemarketing, ataupun internet marketing. Direct Marketing harus bersifat personal, pesan yang disampaikan disesuaikan kondisi konsumen, up to date (menyajikan informasi terbaru) dan interactive, dimana perusahaan lebih mengarah pada komunikasi dua arah tergantung pada respon dari konsumen.&lt;br /&gt;Melalui aktifitas promosi, aktifitas dalam mengkomunikasikan merek, setiap perusahaan harus fokus dalam menghubungkan atribut – atribut dalam merek dan kebutuhan – kebutuhan utama konsumen. Sehingga, atribut tersebut akan tersimpan didalam benak konsumen dan akan dipenuhi dengan nama merek, kenyataan tentang atribut, dan perasaan yang muncul terhadap atribut (Aaker, 1991). Dengan kata lain adalah membuat konsumen menjadi terbiasa terhadap sebuah merek atau produk.&lt;br /&gt;Keterbiasaan ditentukan ditentukan oleh adanya brand recall (suatu bagian dalam brand awareness / kesadaran merek) yang tinggi dan keterbiasaan ini berpangaruh pada pembelian. Alba and Hutchinson (1987) berpendapat bahwa hal tersebut adalah variabel konstan yang mencerminkan pengalaman langsung atau tidak langsung terhadap sebuah merek.
